History of Chi Epsilon (XE)

Founded in 1924, Chi Epsilon is the National Civil Engineering Honor Society dedicated to promoting leadership and academic excellence within the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) community. The UC Berkeley chapter, the 7th chapter of Chi Epsilon, was formed in 1925. Since then, our chapter has become a vital resource for students, offering professional development opportunities, academic support, and fostering a strong community of future civil engineers, continuing a proud legacy of excellence in the civil engineering profession.

Vision

By recognizing outstanding students, graduates, and members of the civil
engineering community for their scholarship, character, practicality, and sociability, Chi Epsilon seeks to foster excellence, connectivity, leadership, and engagement among
those in the civil engineering community to improve our world.

Mission

Our mission is grounded in the core values of Scholarship, Character, Practicality, and Sociability—four pillars that guide our honor society.

The Four Pillars of Chi Epsilon

Chi Epsilon is guided by four core pillars that define the values and principles we uphold as civil engineers. These pillars—Scholarship, Character, Practicality, and Sociability—are essential to the holistic development of our members, ensuring they excel both academically and professionally while contributing positively to society.

Scholarship

We are committed to fostering academic excellence among civil engineering students. Through study halls, FE exam prep workshops, and peer tutoring, we support our members in achieving their highest potential.

Character

Integrity and ethics are at the heart of Chi Epsilon. We encourage our members to uphold the highest standards in their academic and professional lives, and to contribute to the community through meaningful service projects.

Practicality

We bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application. By organizing industry site visits, professional development workshops, and hands-on experiences, we prepare our members to excel in their careers as civil engineers.

Sociability

A strong sense of community is vital to personal and professional growth. We foster connections among members, faculty, and alumni through social events and networking opportunities, creating a supportive environment where lasting relationships are built.
